Indian-origin U.S. Congressman Ami Bera on Friday called for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying both sides have the right to exist and live in peace and dignity.
While I firmly believe that Israel has the right to exist and defend itself, innocent Palestinians also have the right to live in peace and dignity,” Bera said in a video message.
Berra, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said the current violence is unacceptable and an immediate cease-fire is needed so that humanitarian aid can reach the people of Gaza.
“We need an immediate cease-fire,” said Berra, “so that we can get the humanitarian aid, the food, the water, and the medicine that civilians in distress need.” Then, we need to find a different way forward.
Berra’s call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict coincides with the views of many other Americans who are increasingly concerned about the violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The United States has long been a close ally of Israel, but President Joe Biden has also called for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
It is hoped that the international community will work together to contribute to the realization of peace in the Middle East.
